The colour in natural Yellow Diamonds is caused by the presence of Nitrogen in its composition. The more Nitrogen the diamond has the stronger the yellow colour becomes.
Generally, the Yellow Diamond colour grading scale begins with the S-Z range incorporating the Fancy Light Yellow Diamonds. Any Yellow Diamonds that fall below the “Z” range are allocated into one of the five categories:
Fancy Intense,
Fancy Dark,
Fancy Deep,
Fancy Vivid
These are then further divided based on their secondary colours.
Other colours seen along with the main colour are known as secondary colours. If the secondary colour is rarer, then the diamond will be more expensive.
A Fancy Brownish Yellow is the least expensive, followed by a Fancy Greenish Yellow and then a Fancy Orangey Yellow as the most expensive.
Colourless diamonds are graded from D-Z facing down (flat side down) and looking through the side of the diamond. However, all fancy coloured diamonds including the yellow range are always graded face up (flat side up) using the 4c’s:
Carat;
Clarity;
Colour and
Cut
The 4C’s apply to all diamond varieties whether white/colourless or fancy coloured.
The following are taken into consideration when grading the colour:
Hue – the most noticeable colour present;
Saturation – how strong & vivid the colour &
Tone – how dark or light the colour of the diamond is.
